Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian has been a Canadian and American feminist media critic for over 20 years. She is also a seasoned public speaking. She created Feminist Frequency the site with videos and guest posts on the representations of women in pop media. Anita Sarkeesian was a Canadian as well as an American feminist media critique. Feminist Frequency explores how women are represented in popular media. Committed to deconstructing the stereotypes of women that have been portrayed in pop culture she also is a vocal advocate for issues relating to targeted exploitation of women and other marginalized classes of individuals in the internet space. A graduate in political and social thought at York University Sarkeesian is also a much sought-after public presenter and has presented talks at the TEDxWomen XOXO festival and The United Nations' Broadband Working Group on Gender. Passionate about issues of gender and feminism since at an early age, she created her website Feminist Frequency in the year 2009 when she was studying at the university. This ambitious woman planned to start an internet-based series that examined the role of gender in games and was then the victim of a harassment campaign online. The attack did not stop her, but instead strengthened the determination of an activist for women in media. Her notable contributions to the field of feminists have been recognized by numerous awards. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winner for her media criticism and is the co-founder of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit that explores the representations of women in pop cultural and the narratives that surround them.
